De-hair after tanned?

Would it work to take a deer hide that's already been tanned (not brain tanned) years ago and de-hair it with hydrated lime and water?

Peatreg, that will not work with an already tanned hide. It would likely ruin it. About the only thing you could do if you want the hair off, would be to patiently shear or shave the hair off.

I held off saying anything....but I kind of figured it would not work. Thanx for posting your idea on it ... oldwood... put it on a frame and dry scrape it...I am betting that.... might.... work. Quills

My experience on trying to dry scrape a deer hide that is still pliable is that you will get a lot of washboard-ing and scoring of the hide.   If you stretch the tanned hide out on a frame and find...

Oldwood, could you elaborate on why soaking a tanned hide in hydrated lime, as a means to de-hair, would be ruinous to a hide?

Venger, sorry I didn't notice your question. I can not give a scientific answer for why, but like a lot of folks, over the years I have tried many trial and error methods (lots of error) in tanning....

Oldwood is talking about using lime to dehair a already tanned hide Venger. I can see where that would not work at all. As far as the lye goes.... lye and hog fat is used to make soap...maybe it...

Just my two cents. I'm guessing that the variables in processes of lye vs lime may have a lot to do with how easy it is to make a lye solution too strong since it is a lot more soluble that lime. And...
